Process

Gail paints from her own photographs, tweaking them to develop the best possible composition. She does this by preparing drawings in pencil showing the values of the lights and shadows she wants to create. Then she selects her colours and prepares the drawing on sanded paper. She often develops a small study in colour and if she likes it, repeats the scene on a much larger piece of paper.

Gail wears a protective mask while painting. Soft pastels are composed of pure pigments many of which can be hazardous if breathed in. It’s that purity which creates the brilliance and luminosity of the medium.
